As the packaging of mass produced goods decays in streams, the paint still peels from old factory gates and a new depression leaves hopeful publicity flapping above empty retail space, the poetry of signs and signage will offer its imperfect haikus:

anger
agile roof

hot eat Exeter

While simple insensitivities, coincidences and cultural differences provide public ironies, most are best left to Grubb Street’s Christmas stocking-fillers. But there are others that evoke something more than a sneering laugh. That are a kind of accidental fury, a wicked poetry, or an unhinged optimism swinging like a gate through the dust.
