The maternal side of my family (the Pearmans) were small shopkeepers and skilled workers in the 20th century, but a hundred years before that they’d been ‘gentlemen farmers’ living in a very large ‘farmhouse-cum-manor house’ just outside Coventry.
Sadly it was demolished in the mid-20th century, but rather less sadly, when they did they discovered a secret room, without any door (just like in Gustav Meyrink’s Der Golem)!
